Philippine telco launches Southeast Asia’s first commercial 5G network

Globe Telecom, one of the Philippines’ leading carriers, launched the country’s—and Southeast Asia’s—first commercial 5G network on Thursday, Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

An executive with the the carrier confirmed with Xinhua that Chinese telecommunication infrastructure provider Huawei is the key supplier for this 5G newwork.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, another carrier in the country, has also signed 5G-related contracts with Huawei, according to Xinhua.

Just weeks ago, Spain and the United Kingdom also rolled out 5G networks that incorporated equipment produced by Huawei.

Meanwhile, the United States government has been lobbying its allies to ditch Huawei from their 5G communication networks, citing security concerns.
